Itsukushima Shrine & The Great Torii 厳島神社 大鳥居
Itsukushima Shrine is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and The Great Torii is the infamous "floating" torii gate. Another must visit site when you're visiting Hiroshima. If you plan to visit the Itsukushima Shrine, the admission fee is ¥300 for adults, ¥200 for high school students and ¥100 for elementary school students.
Miyajima is also known for deers running around everywhere. They're really used to tourists so don't worry, they won't bite. However, I don't recommend feeding them and don't hold onto pieces of paper because they'll eat your paper. The local souvenir shop features "deer poop ice cream" where you can't find anywhere else!
To get to Miyajima, take a train to Miyajimaguchi Station then take the ferry. If you have a foreigner shinkansen pass, the ferry ride is included with the pass! The ferry to The Great Torii typically runs every 15 minutes starting at 9:10am - 4:10pm. There's also night viewing and seasonal restrictions so please check the Miyajima Ferry Official Website for ferry schedule.
You'll easily spend half a day here to see both the low and high tides. When the tide's low, you can walk all the way to The Great Torii and touch it. But the mesmerizing view is when the high tide comes and the torii is floating above the ocean. You can always check the "Tide Table" before you go. Miyajima is so popular, there's really no "ideal time" to visit. There's going to be a ton of tourists, but nonetheless, still a must visit site for the mesmerizing views!
