Yamazaki Distillery サントリー 山崎蒸溜所
Yamazaki Distillery has become a popular attraction ever since the whisky guru, Jim Murray, named Yamazaki the Whisky of the Year in 2015. Right when you exit the train station, you'll see Suntory Distillery signs everywhere!
The distillery's so popular now, you must make a reservation in advance. The tour used to be free back in 2015 but now there's 2 different tours: Yamazaki Distillery Tour for ￥1,000 and The Story of Yamazaki for ￥2,000. The Story of Yamazaki Tour includes a movie that shows the dedication and skills of producing malt whisky by the craftsmen and also free tasting.
Back in 2015, the tour was in Japanese only but the distillery provided headphones that had English recordings to go along with the tour. Another cool section of the distillery is their whisky library and they have several thousands of bottles in their showroom!
Aside from free tasting, there's also a paid tasting bar where you can sample some premium whiskies. We sampled Hibiki 21, Yamazaki 18 and 25 back in 2015. Some friend of mine was there beginning of 2017 and they even sampled the Hibiki 30 and Yamazaki Sherry Cask so there's still a few premium selections! If you're a whisky drinker, this would be whisky heaven for you.
